As featured in Rick Stein’s French Odyssey
Here in the Lot-et-Garonne you will find a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries – off the beaten track but with all the themes of French life at hand – farming, food, wine and spirits, art and architecture. We are sure that you will be captivated by the gently rolling scenery, the beautiful buildings, the warm welcome of the people and the climate.
The locally grown food is delicious and the wine needs little introduction. Visit the local markets (there is one every day of the week somewhere near), take a tour of the moulins (windmills), the bastides (fortified towns) or walk beside the river. The region is famous for its produce. Plum and nut orchards stretch across the gentle hillsides and cornfields and sunflowers give a golden glow to the landscape. There are many walks which take you through the growing regions and which have stunning views.
The gites all have a guest book which gives a full listing of places of interest and seasonal activities. These range from riding the rollercoaster at Walibi to strolling around the water lily garden at Temple-sur-Lot , relaxing in the thermal baths at Casteljaloux, cycling and walking in the countryside, and for wine lovers a visit to the home of the finest quality wines - Saint-Émilion.
During July and August there are marché producteurs almost every evening – take your plate and knife and fork, buy your supper from a local producer who will then cook it for you, then eat it at long trestle tables while listening to the entertainment.
Whatever you decide to do we can guarantee that you will find a visit to the Lot-et-Garonne a relaxing and interesting holiday.
For music lovers there are jazz and blues festivals and there is an orchestra and a Cabaret group at Vertueil, an adjacent village and for those lazy days there are wonderful local restaurants – a huge menu plus wine from less than 15 euros. During July and August there are many night markets offering local cuisine throughout the villages in the area. Many have live music - great sociable events!
